*Information is subject to change based on the Ontario Court of Justice COVID-19 notices which can be found here: https://www.ontariocourts.ca/ocj/covid-19/
If your first court date was between the dates of March 16, 2020 and July 3, 2020, your court matter has been automatically adjourned to future court dates that have been posted here. Subject to COVID-19 notices, you will have to be present for that new first appearance date either in person, teleconference, or videoconference (check the OCJ notice for future details). Failure to appear for your first court date may result in a warrant for your arrest and a criminal charge of failure to appear for court. If you have already retained a lawyer, they will be able to attend court on your behalf during and after the COVID-19 pandemic.

How Can A Lawyer Clear Your Name
There are a lot of people who would forego searching for the right lawyer. They feel like the process is only going to be complicated. Lawyers Have the Right Experience and Knowledge
Most lawyers would need to spend about 8 to 10 years in learning more about the law and just improving their skills. They have undergone extensive education to have viable knowledge about the law. Some of them even specialize in certain aspects of the law in order to help more people in need. Their experience will be valuable in court. Just imagine if you would represent yourself and you are unable to defend yourself, this can cause more problems in the future. There are details about hiring the right criminal lawyer Toronto when you check here.
Lawyers Will be Experts in Examining Your Case
It has already been mentioned earlier that lawyers will have the right academic credentials. Aside from that, you have to remember that they have a vast knowledge about the Canadian laws and rules that you may not even be familiar with. These are the steps that you can expect to take to get the right lawyer:
Make a shortlist of lawyers that you think will be able to help you with your case.
Ask for a short consultation with the lawyer. Take note that consultations now may be done over the phone.
You will be given an insight about the things that you should expect when the court reopens.
Remember that hiring the right lawyer as soon as possible will be vital. A lot of people have done innocent errors that made their cases harder to present. Having a lawyer will help prevent these mistakes.
The Right Criminal Lawyer Can Represent You in Court
Some people would rather represent themselves in court but this is not very ideal for everyone. If you do not know any knowledge about the law in general, you will find it hard to explain yourself. Even if you have studied to make yourself more understood. Just imagine how you are going to navigate the questioning on your own. It can make everything more complicated. With the help of the right criminal lawyer in Toronto, this can be changed completely.
Importance of Hiring the Right Lawyer

Everything You Need to Know about the Bail Hearing Process
Your lawyer in Brampton will negotiate with the Crown before the bail hearing to try and convince the Crown to release you on consent. If both parties agree to release conditions, those conditions will be conveyed to the judge/justice who will typically agree to the proposed bail and conditions.
If the Crown is contesting the bail, the Crown will first read the details of the charges against you. Both sides may call witnesses on the bail hearing. Typically, the Crown calls no witnesses on a bail and the defence calls any proposed sureties as witnesses.
What Are My Rights When Dealing with the Police?
Do you know what your rights are if you are stopped by the police? Many people mistakenly assume they must assist the police in their investigation, answer all their questions, and allow them to conduct searches. If you are a suspect or are under police investigation, cooperation with police could hurt your defence later on or allow the police to collect incriminating evidence they can use against you.

You have the legal right against self-incrimination and the best way to preserve that right is to not answer questions asked of you by police. Your silence cannot be used against you in court. However, speaking with an officer could result in obstruction charges if your statements are believed to be false or misleading.
What Should You Do Before & After Being Arrested & Why?

Sexual Assault & Consent
Sexual offences carry significant criminal sanctions and consequences on a conviction. Named Sexual Assault in the Criminal Code, it covers a broad range of criminalized activity that can include forced intercourse, date rape, unwanted sexual touching, or any assault on a person for a sexual purpose.

A key element in all sexual assault and assault charges is consent. An assault, sexual or otherwise is characterized as the application of force without consent. The lack of consent to the sexual activity must be proven beyond a reasonable doubt by the Crown Attorney in order for there to be a conviction on sexual assault.
